The Varsity Basketball Bombers traveled to Hughes High School on Saturday night to take on the Big Red.  St. Xavier entered the game with a 2-0 record with wins over Anderson (74-51) and Middletown (76-53) while Hughes entered with a 2-1 record with wins over Withrow (64-49) and Western Hills (91-61) and a loss to Woodward (71-64).

Hughes used their quickness to surprise the Bombers from the start as they jumped out to an 18-5 lead.  The Bombers ended the quarter on the upswing as they cut the deficit to 22-12 before the end of the quarter.  St. Xavier settled down and fought back in the 2nd quarter after getting down 29-15.  They used a 17-7 run to cut the deficit to four points with the halftime score being 36-32.  The Bombers were led by sophomore Danny Greive who scored 7 points during the run and ended the half with 9 points while junior Nathan Stockman scored 6 points during the run to end the half with 9 points as well.

Stockman opened the 2nd half with a layup to get St. Xavier within two points but that would be as close as the Bombers could get it.  Hughes went on an 11-2 run to open their lead to 47-36 and kept it around a double digit lead the rest of the game and finished with a 70-56 win.  Senior Bobby Jefferson scored 6 points in the second half for a game total of 14 points and he finished with 4 rebounds.  Greive scored 6 second half points as well to give him a career high 15 points to lead the Bombers in scoring for the game.  He also grabbed 5 rebounds.  Stockman finished the night with 14 points on 5 for 13 shooting (4-10 3PT).  St. Xavier led very early in the game for 1:08 for their only lead of the night.
