GCL South With Strong Showing at OHSAA Golf Districts

The St. Xavier Varsity Golf Bombers looked strong at the OHSAA Div. I SW West Sectional last week as they claimed the title at Miami Whitewater GC.  They looked for another strong showing on Thursday at Glenview GC in the OHSAA Div. I SW District Tournament.  The top 3 teams from the tournament would advance to the OHSAA Div. I State Tournament held at the Scarlet Course in Columbus, OH next weekend.  The Bombers won the 2015 and 2016 Div. I State Titles and have not missed the State Tournament since the 2012 golf season.

St. Xavier did not get off to the greatest start on the East Course at Glenview but quickly recovered as they posted a front nine total of 146.  Junior Oscar Zimmerman fired a three under 33 on the East course and senior Michael Prebles shot an even 36.  Senior Garrett Madden posted a two over 38 at the turn while classmate Cameron Frazier shot a three over 39.  Senior George Mitchell rounded out the Bombers lineup with a 40 on the front 9 East Course.  The Bombers led the tournament at the turn by 6 strokes over Lakota East who shot a 152 on the East Course as well.

The back nine for St. Xavier was played on the South Course which most people consider the harder of the two courses being played.  That did not faze the Bombers as they posted the same exact score on the back nine of 146.  Zimmerman continued his steady play as he posted a one over 37 on the back nine to post a two under 70 for the round.  The round of 70 was good enough for co-medalist, however, he would finish 2nd in the individuals after losing a sudden death playoff on the second playoff hole.  Prebles continued his strong play as he recovered after three bogeys with birdies on South holes no. 6, 7 and 9 to post an even 36 on the back nine for an even par round of 72 on the day.  Frazier caught fire as he birdied the two Par 3's on the South Course by hitting close tee shots.  His tee shot on hole no. 2 was inches away from a hole in one and his tee shot on hole no. 5 was about 7 feet away that he calmly sank.  He fired a one under 35 on the back nine to post a total score of 74 for the day.  Madden was consistent as well as he shot another two over 38 on the back nine to give him a 76 for the day to round out the St. Xavier 292 team total.  Mitchell shot another 40 on the back nine to round out his score at 80.

The 292 team total earned St. Xavier the 2017 OHSAA Div. I Boys Golf SW District Title and a berth at the 2017 OHSAA Div. I Boys Golf State Tournament.  They finished 9 shots ahead of Lakota East’s 301 and 16 shots ahead of Mason’s 308 who both qualified for the state tournament next weekend as the 2nd place and 3rd place finishers.

Other GCL South competitors included Elder and Moeller as teams and Ben Witzgall from LaSalle as an individual.  Elder shot a team total of 311 which left them in 4th place just outside of qualifying by 3 shots.  The Panthers were led by senior Jacob Rhoads who shot a 75 followed by juniors Jack Wertz and Lucas Palicki with rounds of 77 each.  Junior Evan DiSanto fired a round of 82 while junior Jack Baker shot 84.  Coach Matthew Robben will return a solid core next year and will be a contender in both the GCL and State of Ohio.

Moeller shot a team total of 320 led by senior Cam Lloyd who fired a 36-39 for a total of 75.  Senior Cam Iuni shot an 80 while classmate Guillermo Villa shot 81.  Freshman Thomas Henderson shot an 84 followed by another freshman Matt Daulton at 85.  While the Crusaders lose three great seniors who participatedThursday, they did get two freshman some great experience in tournament play and should be strong over the next couple of years.

LaSalle senior Matt Witzgall qualified for the District Tournament as an individual and was looking for a state bid.  He started strong with a 39 on the front 9 but struggled on the back 9 with a 51.  Witzgall had a great season for the Lancers as he finished All GCL 2nd Team this year.
