GCL South Announces 2018 Soccer All-Star Teams: Moeller’s Ben Hegge, St. Xavier’s Geiser Share Player Of Year Honors

The Greater Catholic League South Division is pleased to announce its all-star soccer team for the 2018 season. Members of this prestigious team, along with winners of the categorical awards, were voted on by league coaches at a special meeting held at the conclusion of the regular season.  Moeller senior forward Ben Hegge, who led the league in scoring and helped his team advance to the Division I state final for the first time in school history, and St. Xavier senior forward Gino Geiser, who finished second in the GCL South in scoring and helped his team advance to the regional semifinals, are the GCL South Co-layers of the Year.

GCL South Announces its All-Star Football Teams for the 2018 Season

Elder senior quarterback Michael Bittner tries to avoid looking at the Greater Catholic League website this fall.

While his family and others like to compare statistical performances in the conference, Bittner says he doesn’t get caught up into social media. It’s not who he is as a student-athlete. He'd prefer to concentrate on the Panthers as a team.

“I try not to worry about my stats,” Bittner said. “I worry about the win.”

But, Wednesday will be one day he can’t avoid. That’s because Bittner was named the Greater Catholic League South Division Player of the Year.

The Greater Catholic League South Division is pleased to announce its all-star football teams and special award winners for the 2018 season.  First- and second-team members of this prestigious team, along with winners of the categorical awards, were voted on by league coaches at a special meeting this past Sunday.  Elder senior quarterback Michael Bittner, a dual threat for the Panthers who completed 157-of-269 passes for a league-leading 2,195 yards and 15 touchdowns while also rushing 165 times for 519 yards, third best in the GCL South, and 10 TDs , is the GCL South Player of the Year.

GCL South Soccer Teams Open With Tourney Wins: All Four League Schools Set For  Sectional Action Thursday Night

No. 1 seed Moeller, Elder and La Salle all posted victories Monday night on the statewide opening night of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest Sectional Tournaments held at the sites of the highest seeded teams.  As a result, the three schools advance to second-round matches on Thursday night, while No. 2 seed St. Xavier will open postseason play that night by hosting Hamilton, a 4-2 winner in its opener against Middletown, at 7 p.m. at St. Xavier Stadium.  The Bombers had a first-round bye by virtue of the tournament draw.

GCL South Soccer Teams Kick Off Postseason: No. 1 Moeller, Elder & La Salle Play Today; St. Xavier Later In Week

Three of the four Greater Catholic League South Division soccer teams begin their postseason journeys today, including top-ranked Moeller, while St. Xavier gets started in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Southwest Sectional/District Tournaments later this week.  Moeller (12-1-3), ranked No. 2 in last week’s Ohio Scholastic Soccer Coaches Association (OSSCA)  DI poll, hosts Winton Woods at 5 p.m. at the Gerry Faust Athletic Complex on Moeller High School’s Montgomery Road campus.
