Moeller picked up where it left off last basketball season on Saturday, and in the process extended its wining streak to 21 games with an impressive 85-42 victory over Lexington Bryan Station in it season opener as part of the Ohio Valley Hoops Classic at Hillsboro High School, behind the staples that led the Crusaders to a fourth Division I state title earlier this year – balanced scoring, sound shooting, stingy defense and strong rebounding.
Greater Catholic League South Division colleague La Salle also was in action last night, falling to host Withrow, 48-44, in overtime as part of the second day of games in the season-opening Tigers Basketball Classic in Hyde Park. It seemed only fitting that Moeller would not allow a goal in regulation during the Division I state final of the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Soccer Tournament Saturday evening at MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus. Moeller will attempt to add to a few more records to the best season in school history, when the Crusaders face Medina in the Division I state championship of the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Soccer Tournament. The Crusaders (19-1-3) have not allowed a goal in seven postseason matches, outscoring their opponents by a combined 24-0 to earn the school’s first trip to the DI Final Four and now the state final. Coach Mike Welker’s team already has set school records for the most victories (19), shutouts (15) and consecutive shutouts (seven). Moeller continued its improbable scoreless postseason run Saturday afternoon, this time shutting out Turpin, 3-0, at Lakota East High School to win the championship of the Division I Southwest Region 4 in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Boys’ Soccer Tournament. The shutout was the sixth straight in the state playoffs and No. 14 in just 22 games this season (a school Record) for the Crusaders, who also posted victory No. 18 in the process, tying the record for most wins in a season set by the Crusaders’ 1994 team.Read More
Moeller High School has won multiple state championships in a variety of sports, including football, baseball, basketball and volleyball to name a few. The Crusaders are the defending Division I state champs in basketball and volleyball, winning both titles during the 2017-18 academic year. St. Xavier, the third GCL South team to earn a postseason berth, was unable to recreate the magic of two years ago – when the Bombers entered the playoffs at 5-5 and became the first team in Ohio high school football history to go on and win a state championship after finishing with a .500 record. St. Xavier took an early 2-0 lead in its state playoff opener, only to see top-ranked and undefeated Colerain reel off 35 unanswered points in a 35-9 Cardinals’ win Friday at Colerain High School in what has become an annual postseason meeting between the two schools.Read More
