The official playoff pairings for the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Football Tournament will be announced Sunday afternoon but, after the final night of the regular season on another cold and rainy Friday, projections have three teams from the Greater Catholic League South Division – league champion Moeller, Elder and St. Xavier – earning berths in the postseason.  Elder is likely to be one of the region’s top four seeds, earning a first-round home game, while Moeller and St. Xavier – which needed one more win and got it last night – are likely headed for first-round road games.

It was a successful night for Moeller and St. Xavier, the top two finishers this season in the Greater Catholic League South Division soccer standings and the top two seeds, respectively, entering the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest Section / District Tournament.  No. 1 Moeller recorded its second win this season against Mason, 2-0, Thursday night at Lakota East High School to win the Southwest 2 District, while No. 2 St. Xavier beat previously undefeated Dayton Carroll, 2-1, on penalty kicks at Lebanon Junior High School to win Southwest District 2.

This is the final day of the high school football regular season, and there are playoff implications for all four Greater Catholic League South Division football teams.  St. Xavier hosts Louisville St. Xavier in a game the Bombers must win in order to qualify for the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Football Tournament, while La Salle needs to win on the road at Elder and hope for some help from other teams to earn a berth.  Both Elder and Moeller have earned postseason berths but are both attempting to earn a first-round home game with victories.

Greater Catholic League South Division soccer teams Moeller and St. Xavier, which have a combined 28-4-5 record this season and earned the top two seeds in the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest Ohio Section / District Tournament, are now one win away from winning district championships and earning berths in the regional tournament.  No. 1 seed Moeller moved on with a 4-0 victory over Colerain Monday night in a district semifinal match at Hamilton High School, while No. 2 seed St. Xavier got past Milford, 3-1, in another district semifinal at Princeton High School’s Viking Stadium.

It was a busy night last Thursday for the Greater Catholic League South Division soccer teams, as all four schools were in action as part of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I Sectional / District Tournaments across Greater Cincinnati.  The end result for the league was two up and two down, as top seeds Moeller and St. Xavier, respectively, advanced with victories, while Elder and La Salle had their postseason journeys halted in a pair of close matches to perennial strong soccer programs.

Elder Gets Back On Track; La Salle Shut Out; St. Xavier, Moeller Host NE Ohio Powers This Afternoon

A week after being held scoreless in the second half of a 28-10 home loss to Winton Woods, Elder got back on track offensively in the first half Frida night – scoring 20 first-quarter points and the game’s first 27 – all on touchdown runs by senior Luke Masminster on its way to a 48-7 victory over St. John Vianney from St. Louis at The it in Price Hill. 

St. Xavier and Moeller are in action today, with the Bombers (4-4) hosting Cleveland St. Ignatius at 2 p.m. at St. Xavier Stadium.  St. Xavier faces St. Ignatius (6-2), winner of six straight, today and then Louisville St. Xavier (7-2) on Friday, October 26 in its quest for a postseason berth.  The Bombers sit at No. 11 in Region 4 this week, but most prognosticators believe that St. Xavier would earn a playoff spot by winning the last two games – both of which are at home.  Two years ago, St. Xavier became the first team in Ohio history to enter the postseason at 5-5 and win a state championship.

Senior quarterback Patrick Delahunty connected with senior receiver Jack Kennedy for a 72-yard touchdown pass to give Cleveland St. Ignatius a 10-0 halftime lead, which turned out to be more than enough for a Wildcats’ defense that held Elder scoreless until the game’s final minutes in a 17-7 win Saturday afternoon at Byers Field in Parma, Ohio.  The win was the third straight for St. Ignatius, which handed Elder its second consecutive loss against a perennial Northeast Ohio power.   Lakewood St. Edward rallied for 22 second-half points a week ago to beat Elder, 36-30, at The Pit in Price Hill.

After being held scoreless in the first half, Moeller scored 19 unanswered points in the second half – 13 coming in the fourth quarter – to post a 19-14 victory over St. Xavier in the Greater Catholic League South Division opener for both schools Friday night at St. Xavier High School.  The game’s start time, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., was moved back 90 minutes in an attempt to avoid any lightning delays in anticipation of the predicted thunderstorms expected to hit Greater Cincinnati Friday night, making Crusaders’ first-year coach Doug Rossfeld to wait a little longer to record his inaugural win in the GCL South.

After trailing by 14 points at halftime, Lakewood St. Edward rallied to tie the game at 28-28 after scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter, only to see Elder take a 30-28 lead by virtue of a safety two minutes into the final quarter, before the Eagles scored what turned out to be the game-winning TD on a 22-yard pass from Garrett Dzuro to Jack Kurz with 3:55 remaining to emerge with a 36-30 victory over Elder early Saturday evening at The Pit in Price Hill – sending Elder to its first loss of the season after opening with three consecutive victories.

It was anything but an ordinary night of high school football Friday, as continuous lightning delays in Greater Cincinnati ultimately forced the majority of high school games – including those involving Greater Catholic League South Division schools La Salle and St. Xavier – to be suspended and scheduled to resume today.  But two league members – Elder and Moeller – were able to emerge with key interstate victories in the second week of the regular season.  Elder traveled to Indianapolis and emerged with a wild 39-34 victory against Cathedral, while Moeller stayed home and beat Louisville Trinity, 21-14.

It was another state championship weekend for the Greater Catholic League South Division.  Just one day after St. Xavier won the Division I state lacrosse title, Moeller capped what was a near-perfect season by winning its final two matches Sunday to win the Division I state crown at the Ohio High School Boys’ Volleyball Association State Tournament at Capital University in greater Columbus.  The Crusaders defeated Beavercreek in four sets in the semifinals in their first match yesterday, and then bested Hilliard Darby in straight sets in the title match later in the day.

St. Xavier Captures DI State Lacrosse Championship; Bombers Beat St. Ignatius For Third Time This Spring By One Goal

Based on the two regular-season matches between St. Xavier and Cleveland St. Ignatius, both decided by one goal, Saturday’s title match between the two schools in the Ohio High  School Athletic Association Lacrosse State Tournament  figured to be another instant classic.  And it certainly didn’t disappoint, as St. Xavier defeated its Northeast Ohio rival for the third time this spring by one goal, winning 10-9 at Ohio Wesleyan University Selby Stadium to earn St. Xavier its fourth state lacrosse title overall and first since the sport became an official OHSAA-sanctioned sport a year ago.

St. Xavier moved to within one win Wednesday night of keeping the state lacrosse championship trophy in the Greater Catholic League South Division, waiting through a lengthy weather delay to ultimately emerge with an 18-8 victory over Worthington Kilbourne in the semifinals of the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Lacrosse Tournament at Chaminade-Julieene in Dayton.  The victory moves the Bombers into the final match against Cleveland St. Ignatius, which defeated Dublin Coffman, 16-15, in overtime in the other semifinal at Wooster High School.

The Greater Catholic League South Division certainly will be well represented at the Ohio High School Boys’ Volleyball Association State Tournament next week at Capital University in Greater Columbus, with three league members earning spots by winning regional finals Saturday at St. Xavier High School.  Moeller easily won its final in straight sets, La Salle came back after losing its first set to win three straight, while St. Xavier needed five sets to eventually emerge with a victory over league rival Elder in what definitely will be a match to remember, prevailing, 22-25, 25-18, 25-23, 32-34 and 15-9 to move on to the state tournament.

A year ago, Moeller knocked off St. Xavier in the regional final of the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Lacrosse Tournament as part of a 10-game winning streak that eventually led to the Crusaders winning the Division I state championship.  On Friday night at Mason High School, the same two teams met in the Region 4 title match again with a berth to state on the line, but this time it was No. 1 seed St. Xavier standing firm in a 17-5 victory to earn a trip to Columbus next week needing just two victories to keep the state title in the Greater Catholic League South Division.

One day earlier, Moeller rallied from an early 2-0 deficit against Greater Catholic League rival Elder to emerge with a 3-2 victory in nine innings and earn a berth in the regional final of the Ohio High School Athletic Association State Baseball Tournament.  And early Friday evening, the Crusaders found themselves in a similar position – trailing Mason, 3-0, after just two innings.  Once again, Moeller was able to rally back and make it 3-2 heading to the final three innings, but the Crusaders were unable to overtake the Comets and eventually fall by that score in the Cincinnati Region final at the University of Cincinnati’s Marge Schott Stadium.

GCL South Teams Finish Strong At District Track  Moeller, St. X In Top Three At Mason ; Elder, La Salle 1-2 At WW

One week after finishing within four points of each other at the Greater Catholic League South Division Track & field Championships, Moeller and St. Xavier were at it again at the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division I District Meet held last week at Mason High School.  Moeller, which won its first GCL South championship since 2004, totaled 108 points to finish second behind Mason’s winning 114 team score in the final standings.  The Crusaders were just three points ahead of St. Xavier’s 105 after winding up four points better than the Bombers in the earlier GCL meet that came down to the final event.
