While there are still be plenty of league games to be played, this spring defending Greater Catholic League South Division champion Moeller looks to take a big step toward repeating when it meets perennial contender Elder in a home-and-home series Monday and Wednesday.  The two teams have combined to win seven straight games and are tied atop the league standings with identical 2-1 GCL South records.

St. Xavier, the 2017 league winner, is in third place at 3-2.

Moeller (12-4), which has won four straight, will host Elder (10-3), winner of three in a row, at 5 p.m. Monday at Schuler Park, where Moeller plays its home games.  The two teams then play again at that same time Wednesday at the Panther Athletic Complex in Price Hill.

Moeller won the first meeting, 9-0, on April 9 behind a complete-game, four-hitter tossed by junior Austin Strickland – who gave up no walks while striking out nine.  The Crusaders put the game away by scoring six times in the top of the fifth inning, behind doubles by a trio of juniors in Michael O’Callaghan, John Codner and Bryce Davenport.  Moeller finished with 10 hits, led by two apiece from juniors Parker Allen and Eric Bronner.

Elder, which was scheduled to play today against Lakota West as part of the Skyline Chili Reds Futures High School Showcase, has the weekend off after the game was postponed because of inclement weather.  The game will be played at 7 p.m. on Friday, May 10 at the University of Cincinnati’s Marge Schott Stadium.  Elder is coming off a 4-3 victory over Covington Catholic in nine innings Wednesday in Florence.  Elder has won six of its last seven.

La Salle was also scheduled to be the first game of today’s DH at UC and face Oak Hills, will now face the Highlanders at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at UC.  The Lancers (7-6, 1-4 GCL South) dropped a pair of one-run games this week to St. Xavier, 11-10 and 3-2.  Tickets already purchased for today’s Elder and La Salle games as part of the Showcase will be honored on the rescheduled dates.

St. Xavier (6-7), winner of three of its last four games makes its Showcase appearance next Saturday, April 27 as part of Big League Weekend at Great Amiercan Ball Park.  The Bombers will face Loveland in the third of four games that day, with first pitch slated for 4 p.m.  Moeller was part of the big Showcase Opening Day held Saturday, April 6 at the P&G MLB Cincinnati Reds Youth Academy, posting a 6-3 victory against Upper Arlington.
