Three Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams will compete this weekend in the inaugural Midwest King Classic to be played at Wade E. Miller Arena on the campus of Middletown High School. The event features 14 boys’ teams playing seven games Friday and Saturday at Jerry Lucas Court.
In addition to some of the region’s top teams matched up in two days of basketball, students from each of the participating schools will create Martin Luther King Jr. displays based on their favorite MLK quotes impact on modern society through visual graphics, collages and other forms of creativity.
Elder (6-7 entering play tonight) was scheduled to face defending Kentucky state champion Covington Catholic(15-4, winner of five straight games) at 6:15 p.m. Saturday but, with a projected winter storm expected to dump between three to six inches of snow in the region from Saturday night to Sunday morning, event organizers have moved the game up to a 2 p.m. start time. Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy will then play Sycamore immediately following at 3:30; the game was originally scheduled for 8.
La Salle and Moeller are scheduled to play as part of Sunday’s five game schedule. La Salle (7-5) will meet Thurgood Marshall (4-6) in the day’s third game at 4:30 p.m. Moeller (11-0), ranked No. 1 in this week’s Associated Press Division I state poll, will oppose Lakota East (8-3) at 8 in the final game. Moeller, the defending DI state champion, takes a 31-game winning streak into its GCL South game against Elder at 7:30 tonight at The Pit in Price Hill. That game is part of the Mercy Health Hoops Classic.
Sunday’s schedule also features a matchup between DIII state champion Deer Park and Purcell Marian at 6:15 p.m. For the complete schedule and ticket information, visitwww.midwestkingclassic.com.
