A four-game winning streak that includes three straight victories over Greater Catholic League South Division competition by a combined 21-1 score has Moeller one win away from clinching the outright league title. The Crusaders can wrap up the GCL South crown with a win against Elder at 5 p.m. today at the Robert J. Schuler Sports Complex in Loveland. Moeller (13-6, 6-2 GCL South) moved a game ahead of defending champion St. Xavier with 7-0 and 4-1 wins last week against La Salle, and then a 10-0 victory over Elder on Monday behind a no-hitter tossed by senior Mo Schaffer.
St. Xavier (13-6, 5-3) can tie Moeller for the title with a win against Ls Salle at 5 p.m. today at St. Xavier and a Moeller loss to Elder (15-7, 2-6), which defeated Walnut Hills, 11-5, Tuesday. The Bombers remained in the hunt with a 2-1 win at La Salle on Monday, then stepped out of league play to post a 19-6 win over Anderson yesterday. St. Xavier, like Moeller, might be playing its best baseball of a spring that has been dominated by cold temperatures and plenty of rain – having won two straight and eight of the last nine games, the lone setback to Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit, 2-0, last Weekend.
Each of the four GCL South schools has won the league title outright in the last four years, with Elder winning in 2014, Moeller claiming tie title in 2015, La Salle coming out on top a year later, and St. Xavier winning last spring. Each team finished with a 7-2 league record the year it won the GCL South crown. The GCL South schools have put up some solid numbers this year, too, with a combined 51-30 record through games Tuesday. La Salle (10-11, 3-5) is at St. Xavier at 5 p.m. today in the other GCL South game on the last day of league play this spring.
