Sophomore Jaylen Lemons came off the bench to score a career-high 15 points to help La Salle post a 60-40 victory over Lakota West in an opening-round game of a Cincinnati Division I sectional basketball tournament played Thursday night at Hamilton High School. The victory was the fourth straight win for the Lancers, who opened play involving Greater Catholic League South Division schools by defeating West for the second time this season – having also won 64-53 at West on December 19.
La Salle advances to meet Hamilton, which had a first-round bye, at 7:30 p.m. next Tuesday at Fairfield High School.
Elder (12-12) is the next GCL South team in action, as the Panthers meet Mt. Healthy at 5:30 tonight at Fairfield in sectional action. GCL South champion and the sectional tournament’s No. 1 seed Moeller (19-3) looks to extend its perfect calendar year against Harrison at 7:30 Saturday at Hamilton. Moeller is 12-0 this year, and is vying for a return trip to the state final. St. Xavier (15-7) is the final GCL South team in action this weekend, taking on Loveland at 8 Saturday evening at Lakota West.
Clemons scored 11 of his team-high 15 in the third quarter for La Salle – nailing three three-point shots in the period and sinking all four of his free-throw attempts in the game. La Salle jumped out to a 22-9 halftime lead and outscored West, 22-12, in the third period to put the game away and advance to the second round.
