After finishing the regular season with three consecutive victories to earn sole possession of second place in the Greater Catholic League South Division basketball standings, La Salle hopes to continue that momentum when it begins a stretch of four opening-round games in three days for league teams tonight. The Lancers meet Lakota West for the second time this season in a Cincinnati sectional game at 7:30 at Hamilton High School.
La Salle (13-9) defeated West, 64-53, in the first meeting at West on December 19 behind a game-high 26 points from senior forward Riley Haubner, who was named co-GCL South Player of the Year with Moeller senior Jeremiah Davenport in recent voting by league coaches. Haubner enters postseason play after leading the GCL South in scoring during the regular season, averaging 21.3 points in 21 games. He has scored 81 points in the Lancers’ three-game winning streak, including a career-high 37 points in a 60-53 win against Elder on February 9.
Elder (12-12) follows La Salle with its opening sectional game Friday, taking on Mt. Healthy at 5:30 p.m. at Fairfield High School as part of another Cincinnati sectional. GCL South champion and top-ranked Moeller and St. Xavier both are scheduled to open tournament play Saturday. Moeller (19-3), which is a perfect 12-0 in the calendar year and is the sectional’s No. 1 seed, faces Harrison at 7:30 p.m. at Hamilton, while St. Xavier (15-7) looks to continue its solid season when it opposes Loveland at 8 that evening at Lakota West.
