Elder looks to win the Greater Catholic League South Division Wrestling Championship for the third straight year Saturday at La Salle High School, the host site for this year’s reserve and varsity tournaments.  For the second straight year, the four varsity teams will compete in a dual format while the freshmen and junior varsity wrestlers will square off in a reserve tournament with a bracketed format.  The reserve event is slated to begin with weigh-ins at 7 a.m. followed by the tournament at 8, with the varsity weigh-in at 11 a.m. and first-round matches set to start at noon.

Admission is $7 for adults and $5 for students and Senior Citizens.  Admission is good for the entire day.

La Salle, which lost to Elder, 35-24, in the championship match last year, is the tournament’s No. 1 seed.  Elder is the No. 2 seed, with Moeller and St. Xavier seed Nos. 3 and 4, respectively.  La Salle will wrestle St. Xavier in the first round, with Elder meeting Moeller at the same time.  The consolation dual will begin 20 minutes after the completion of first-round matches, with the first-place dual scheduled for 3:30.

Elder is looking to win again, after starting its streak by finishing atop a 10-school field that included the GCL South schools and the six GCL Co-Ed Division schools in 2016.  Last year, Elder beat Moeller, 58-15, in the semifinals to advance to the title match against La Salle – which defeated St. Xavier in its first match.  Elder also won the GCL South Junior Varsity Championship last year as well.
