Senior forward Chase Wolf scored a game-high 17 points, while fellow classmate Bobby Jefferson added 11 points to help St. Xavier outscore Beavercreek, 34-26, in the second half on its way to a 58-48 win over the Greater Western Ohio Conference opponent Tuesday night in Beavercreek. Greater Catholic League South Division colleague Elder ran its winning streak to a modest two games with a 37-32 win at The Pit over neighborhood rival Western Hills. La Salle and Moeller had the night off before resuming GCL South play Friday night.
St. Xavier (11-4), which earned its first GCL South victory in 28 games with a 55-53 overtime win against Elder at St. Xavier last Friday, continued to play solid basketball behind good shooting, hitting 21-of-41 field goals, and tough play around the basket, outrebounding Beavercreek, 30-21. The Bombers held a slim two-point lead at halftime, but came alive in the second half to score 34 points and up its record this year to 6-1 – the lone loss coming at Moeller in their GCL South opener almost two weeks ago. St. Xavier looks to make it two straight in the league when it travels to La Salle (8-7) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
Just four days after posting a home victory over Cincinnati Public Schools member Withrow at The Pit, Elder (8-8) stayed home and knocked off another CPS member in Western Hills to even its record this season. The Panthers continue to led by senior guard Zach Harp, who ranks second in the GCL South averaging 16.6 points a game. Elder looks to pick up its first victory Friday, when the Panthers travel to meet Moeller – which has won or shared the league title the last five seasons and is a perfect 6-0 in 2018. Moeller has won 11 straight GCL South games.
