An impressive 14-2 record against non-conference opponents has all four Greater Catholic League South Division football teams in position to host first-round games, according to the first weekly computer ratings released earlier today by the Ohio High School Athletic Association. The weekly ratings are released each Tuesday from week five of the regular season through October 29, when 224 teams will officially qualify for the playoffs in seven divisions. Each division has four regions, with the top eight finishers earning postseason berths and the top four hosting first-round games.
Defending Division state champion St. Xavier (4-0), winner of 10 consecutive games dating back to last October, is No. 1 in Division I, Region 4 with an average of 10.775 points. The Bombers open GCL South play Friday by facing No. 2 Moeller (3-1), which has an 8.125 average, at 7 p.m. a Lockland’s Roettger Field. Sycamore (3-1), with a 7.6 average, is third in the region, with GCL South member Elder at No. 4, with an average of 7.375. Lakota East (3-1), Mason (3-1), Milford (3-1) and Fairfield (2-2) hold down spots five through eight, while Colerain – which has won its last two games after starting 0-2 – is ninth.
La Salle (4-0), the three-time defending Division II state champion and winner of 15 consecutive games, holds the top spot in Region 8. The Lancers have an average of 12.725 points, followed by Anderson (4-0, 11.35), Winton Woods (4-0, 9.45) and Sidney (4-0, 9.375). Dayton Belmont (4-0), Harrison (3-1), Edgewood (3-1) and Marion Harding (3-1) round out the top eight spots, respectively. La Salle can further entrench its hold on the No. 1 position if it can defeat Winton Woods Friday. Kickoff between the two unbeatens is 6 p.m. at Lancer Stadium on the La Salle High School camps.
