Elder tips off a busy weekend schedule of games for Greater Catholic League South Division basketball teams, when the Panthers (1-0) travel to the Bluegrass state to face Cooper – the Kentucky state runner-up last season and again one of the state’s top-ranked teams this season. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. at Cooper High School in Union. All four league teams are in action Saturday, with first-year La Salle coach Pat Goedde making his varsity head coaching debut when the Lancers tip off their season by hosting Shroder Paideia at 5 p.m. tomorrow at the school’s Bill Cady Gymnasium.
Goeede, a 1991 La Salle High School graduate and longtime Lancers’ assistant coach, replaces Dan Fleming as the fourth coach in the school’s history. Goedde, an assistant the last 26 years after his playing days, joins Fleming, Hep Cronin and Cady as Lancer head coaches. La Salle finished 24-4 overall last season, including a 4-2 record in the GCL South. The Lancers won nine of their final 10 games before falling to league champion and unbeaten Moeller, 38-32, in the regional final. Moeller advanced to the state championship game before losing to Massillon Jackson, 39-38.
Moeller and St. Xavier look to remain unbeaten in road non-conference games Saturday. The Crusaders (2-0), who defeated Oak Hills, 69-45, on Tuesday night at home, travel to GCL Co-Ed member Purcell Marian at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Seniors Isaiah Payton and Jeremiah Davenport scored 18 and 17 points, respectively, to lead the Crusaders. St. Xavier (2-0), which beat Middletown, 76-53, behind a career-high 36 points from junior guard Nathan Stockman
