Defending Greater Catholic League South Division champion Moeller, which made it to the Division I state final last season before suffering its only loss, 39-38, to Massillon Jackson, capped a 3-0 opening weekend for the league by defeating Eastmoor Academy, 61-44, Saturday night on Montgomery Road thanks to a big second half. Moeller’s debut victory came one night after both Elder and St. Xavier posted non-conference wins on the first night Ohio boys’ basketball teams could play under rules of the Ohio High School Athletic Association.
La Salle was the only GCL South school not in action this weekend. The Lancers are set to open their season under first-year head coach Pat Goedde, a longtime Lancers’ assistant, on Saturday night when the Lancers host Shroder Paideia at 5 p.m. at Bill Cady Gymnasium. The La Salle season opener is one of seven games GCL South schools are scheduled to play this week.
Elder rallied late to beat Fairfield, 61-54, Friday night at The Pit in Price Hill, while St. Xavier opened with a 74-51 road win at Anderson as part of the Mercy Health Tipoff Classic that same evening.
