Elder and La Salle, scheduled to meet in the regular-season finale next Friday at La Salle’s Lancer Stadium, will enter the game with plenty of momentum after the two Greater Catholic League South Division teams posted convincing victories in non-conference home games Friday night. GCL South colleagues Moeller and St. Xavier will travel to Northeast Ohio today to take on two of the state’s perennial football powers in a SW Ohio vs. NE Ohio doubleheader that will be shown on live television by Spectrum Sports.
Elder (6-3), fresh off a 35-34 road win at previously undefeated Winton Woods, rolled out to a 35-0 lead after one quarter and coasted to a 62-6 win over International School of Broward, Fla. Friday evening at The Pit in Price Hill. Junior running back Luke Masminster carried 11 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns as the Panthers racked up 411 total yards. Elder rushed 37 times for 331 yards and finished with 411 total yards, while the Panthers’ defenseforced five turnovers, including three interceptions – two by junior Jake O’Brien. Senior quarterback Danny Nieman ran for two scores and tossed a TD pass on Senior Night.
La Salle (7-2), which returned home after a 17-9 win at Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary last Friday, had four different players score TDs in the first half en route to a 38-10 win over St. Charles Prep from Columbus Friday evening at Lancer Stadium. Senior Sam Hildebrand returned the opening kickoff 98 yards for a TD, and Cameron Porter, Deon Campbell and senior quarterback Griffin Merritt each scored on the ground for the Lancers. Merritt accounted for more than 300 total yards, rushing for 117 and two TDs (one an 84-yarder) and throwing for 192. La Salle held St. Charles to 123 total yards and nine first downs.
Elder and La Salle, both 1-1 in the GCL South, play at 7 p.m. next Friday at La Salle.
GCL South champion St. Xavier (8-0), one of just four undefeated teams in Greater Cincinnati, looks to extend its 14-game winning streak when it meets Cleveland St. Ignatius (7-1) at 3 p.m. today at Byers Field in Parma. The rematch of last year’s Division I state championship game, won by St. Xavier, 27-20, in double overtime, will be shown live on Spectrum Sports channels 311 and 1311 HD to its subscribers in Ohio. St. Xavier is No. 1 in the Associated Press Division I state poll, while St. Ignatius enters the game at No. 6 after suffering its first loss of the season to GCL South member Moeller, 41-20, last Friday in Greater Columbus.
Moeller (4-4) will also be in Greater Cleveland today, traveling to meet No. 3 Lakewood St. Edward (8-0) at 4 this afternoon at Lakewood High School. The Crusaders, who moved back into the playoff picture after last week’s win, face a talented St. Edward team that defeated Elder, 34-7, in NE Ohio earlier this season. With a win against St. Edward or Winton Woods on the road in its regular-season finale, Moeller likely will earn a home game in the first round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association state playoffs that begin Friday, November 3. St. Edward beat Moeller, 24-21, at Lockland Stadium last October on a 45-yard field goal by Mason Lawler with four seconds left.
The Moeller-St. Edward game also will be aired live by Spectrum Sports on channels 314 and 1314 HD. This game will be joined in progress on channels 311 and 1311 HD after the conclusion of St. Xavier-St. Ignatius. Both games will be streamed (log in required) at myspectrumsports.com. Spectrum Sports is the official broadcast partner of the GCL South.
