Greater Catholic League South Division members Elder and La Salle posted victories Tuesday night in the opening round of the Ohio High School Athletic Association Southwest District Soccer Tournaments. Elder defeated Colerain, 2-0, at the Panther Athletic Complex, while La Salle got past Hamilton, 4-2, in a match played at Lancer Stadium. The wins keep both teams alive in the postseason, with La Salle earning a third shot at GCL South colleague St. Xavier at 7 p.m. Saturday at St. Xavier. Elder advances to meet Fairfield at 7 Saturdayevening at Fairfield Soccer Stadium.
Moeller (12-1-3), the GCL South champion and No. 1 seed in the Southwest District after ending the regular season ranked No. 1 in Greater Cincinnati, opens postseason play when it hosts Winton Woods (5-7-1) at 3 p.m. Saturday at Moeller High School. Winton Woods advanced with a 5-4 shootout win against Kings in Tuesday’s opening round of the sectional tournament. Moeller enters the match having not lost in its last six matches; the Crusaders’ lone blemish this season is a 1-0 setback at Louisville Trinity last month.
Elder (3-9-5) snapped a five-match losing streak with the win over Colerain. The Panthers got two goals from sophomore Connor Ammon, and senior goalkeeper Lou Langen recorded seven saves to earn the shutout. Elder faces a difficult test when it meets Fairfield (11-1-4), the regular-season champ in the Greater Miami Conference. The two teams met back on August 31, with Fairfield posting a 2-0 victory.
La Salle (6-8-2) also kept its postseason alive by snapping a three-match winless streak and earned a third shot at St. Xavier (8-4-4) by knocking off Hamilton in the first soccer game in 17 years to be played at Lancer Stadium on La Salle’s campus. The Lancers got two goals from Zach Arnold, who returned from an injury, while junior Will McAlister and senior Peyton Clawson also scored. St. Xavier defeated La Salle in two regular-season meetings, winning 3-1 and then 1-0 in the latest match, played on October 10.
